SEARCH FOR OTHER WORLDS

Below is an essay written in 2004. Much has happenned in the search for exosolar planets. Many more planets have been discovered now up to 349.

The radial velocity method continues to produce the most planets.

The transit method has accelerated with telescopes now dedicated to this technique. A mission recently launced s aiming to locate Earth size planets is called the Kepler Mission. It will observe 100, 000 stars over 3.5 years..

The oldest method, astrometry has finally produced its first exoplanet discovery after 50 years. This is a planet at 6 Jupiter massess orbiting  a red dwarf. The star is located in Aquilla 20 light years away and only one twelfth the mass of the Sun..

In 2008 the first planet was directly imaged in the infra red.

Planets have now been discovered orbiting a Brown Dwarf and free floating planets have also been discovered.
